Rabbit Reviews: Em Cosmestics (by Michelle Phan)
Love her or hate her, Michelle Phan has made quite a name for herself in the make up industry. I’ve personally been a subscriber to her YouTube channel for quite a long time and I’ve liked some of her business ventures, such as Ipsy. Recently, she launched her own make up line called Em Cosmetics but I’ve stayed away due to its pricey nature. (She’s touted it as affordable but it’s actually very expensive) After her launch, though, she had a sale where you could buy a lipstick and an eyeliner for $30 and receive a free deluxe sample of her Life Palette. I thought $30 was quite a good price for all those products, so I took the plunge and decided to try them out. Check out my reviews and pictures below.

Creamy Color Sheer Lipstick in Showstopper
For everyday looks, I love sheer lipsticks like Maybelline’s Color Whisper and Revlon’s Lip Butters. This product is definitely reminiscent of those, with maybe a bit more pigmentation. It goes on pretty smoothly, although it doesn’t last very long. The color isn’t really true to what was shown on the website, either; it looked very pink in the picture but it has more of a purple-ish color on my lips. Sadly, the color is almost a dupe of Color Whisper in Petal Rebel, which I already own (and is much cheaper).

Waterliner in Chocolate Dream
This is a pretty good eyeliner, I must admit. It goes on very smoothly (almost as easily as my gel liner), has a little smudging brush on the back and also has a hidden sharpener. It stays put throughout the day and even when I swatched it on my hand, I had to use make up remover to get it off. The color is a nice flattering dark brown. I think it’s definitely a good eyeliner to have in my collection.

Life Palette Deluxe Sampler
This is what I was most excited to try. Based on the website, I thought this would be one full section of a life palette, but it’s only three eyeshadows (one large and two small) and a lip product. (Not that I’m disappointed, it just feels like it was falsely advertised) The eye colors include a shimmery dark brown, a shimmery violet and a shimmery/metallic gray/blue color. The lip color looks like a shimmery red color.
I wasn’t sure if the eye colors would look well together, but after wearing them today, I’m convinced they’re quite flattering. I used the brown on my lid, the purple in my crease and outer corners, and the teal as a liner and was pretty pleased. They’re not the most pigmented eyeshadows, though it’s easy to layer them to get color payoff. (I didn’t need to wet the brush, either) They go on smoothly as well, not chalky at all. My only complaint is that it was hard to blend and I love to blend as much as I can.

I was pretty disappointed in the lip color, though. It’s a lovely color in the pan, but it goes on my lip with barely any color. (It just sort of warms them up a bit) It has a glossy, shimmery finish, but it rubs off incredibly quickly. It’s a lip color that needs to be reapplied often, but the inconvenient packaging discouraged me from taking it along. Instead, I just grabbed a similarly colored lipstick.

Overall, I think Em Cosmetics are a little too expensive for the price they are. The eyeshadows and liner were nice, maybe higher quality than drugstore brands, but not enough to warrant such an extreme difference in price. The lip products were especially disappointing. I would have no problem buying these if they were cheaper, though, because it seems like they have a nice collection of eyeshadow palettes.
